HEidelberg LInux Cluster System (HELICS)
At the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) of the University of Heidelberg two high-performance PC clusters are maintained for the research and development of scientific computing. These parallel clusters are used by groups in particular in the basis research of mathematics, computer science, bio computer science and chemistry for extensive calculations and simulations.
The cluster HELICS II, installed in August 2007, is the first cluster in Europe with the new
10G Myrinet high speed interconnect switch, with 160 compute nodes attached.
The cluster HELICS I, installed at the
beginning of 2002, was the world's fastest PC-cluster, entering the Top500 at
the 35th position. HELICS I is retired.
